J. D. Souther

J. D. Souther ( John David Souther actually; born November 2, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American singer-songwriter, country-rock singer and actor.

Biography

JD Souther was raised in Amarillo, Texas. In his youth he was heavily influenced by the music of Roy Orbison and tried to imitate his style. In the late 1960s Souther moved to Los Angeles, where he met Glenn Frey, a guitarist, who like himself was from Detroit. They began to write music together and play. One of her neighbors in LA was Jackson Browne with whom both have often collaborated later.

Souther and Frey formed the folk duo Longbranch Pennywhistle. Their only LP was released in 1970 on Jimmy Bowen 's Amos Records; involved were the guitarist James Burton and Ry Cooder, fiddler Doug Kershaw, drummer Jim Gordon, pianist Larry Knechtel and bassist Joe Osborn.

After recording his first solo album in 1972 at the urging of David Geffen, he founded the Souther -Hillman - Furay band with Chris Hillman and Richie Furay. The group brought out two albums and broke up after that.

One of the biggest hits Southers as a songwriter include " Best of My Love", "Victim of Love ", " Heartache Tonight" and " New Kid in Town", all interpreted by the Eagles. He also wrote songs for his former girlfriend Linda Ronstadt and recorded several pieces with her. With Bonnie Raitt sang on their album " Sweet Forgiveness " the title "Home".

Southers biggest hit as a solo artist in 1979 was the song " You're Only Lonely " ( in the style of Roy Orbison ) by the eponymous LP, a top ten hit on the Billboard charts. Up to the eleventh published with James Taylor "Her Town Too " came from Taylor's album "Dad Loves His Work".

He played at the concert Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night (1987). In 1989 he sang in the movie " Always - The Fire Angel of Montana ", the song " Smoke Gets In Your Eyes ".

As an actor he was also in the role of John Dunaway in the third season of the U.S. television series " thirtysomething " and Ted in the movie " Postcards from the Edge " (1990).

In December 2004, Souther moved from LA to Nashville, where he lives with his family. In 2006 he took on a new album to be released in 2007.

Souther is a democrat and, in late 2006, along with Jackson Browne and Michael Stanley as Fundraiser ( Fundraiser ) for Democratic candidates in Ohio.
