J. Duncan M. Derrett

J. Duncan M. Derrett (full name John Duncan Martin Derrett, born August 30, 1922 in London, † 21 October 2012 in Blockley, Cotswold ) was a British legal scholar and orientalist.

Life

After war service in India (1942-1945) Derrett studied from Indian history and religion at Jesus College (Oxford) and at the School of Oriental and African Studies and was awarded the degree. From 1965 until his retirement in 1982 was a professor of Oriental Law at University College London.

Derrett has focused particularly on the Indian legal thought, with Christian and Buddhist teachings and their similarities. He is the author of numerous monographs and essays, some of which were translated into several languages.
