J. I. M. Stewart

Michael Innes (actually John Innes Mackintosh Stewart; * September 30, 1906 in Edinburgh, Scotland, † November 12, 1994 in Coulsdon in Surrey, England ) was a Scottish crime writer. He also was a professor of English and Literature.

Life

Stewart was a pupil of the Edinburgh Academy and then studied at Oriel College, Oxford in English Literature. In 1929, he studied in Vienna psychoanalysis. From 1930 to 1935 he taught English literature at the University of Leeds. In 1932 he married Margaret Hardwick physician. Innes wrote his first novel in 1936 during a long sea voyage to Australia, where he had accepted a professorship at the University of Adelaide. From 1946 to 1948 he taught at Queen's University Belfast Belfast and then moved to the Christ Church College, Oxford.

Protagonist of his detective stories is Detective Inspector John Appleby, which too much light in the dark with the dark side of the university's operation has to deal in Innes ' first novel. Main setting of many of his novels is Oxford and the surrounding area

Innes wrote about as many novels over the course of 50 years. A selection of these is published in the series DuMont Crime Library.
