J. J. Pickle

James Jarrell " J. J. " Pickle ( born October 11, 1913 in Big Spring, Texas; † 18 June 2005 in Austin, Texas ) was an American politician. Between 1963 and 1995 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

JJ Pickle attended the common schools and then studied until 1938 at the University of Texas. Between 1938 and 1941 he was director of the National Youth Administration. After that, he served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He then worked in the broadcast industry. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1957 and 1960 he was a member of the State Board of the Democrats. From 1961 to 1963 he sat in the Employment Commission of the State of Texas.

Following the resignation of Mr Homer Thornberry Pickle was at the due election for the tenth seat of Texas as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 21 December 1963. After 15 Re-elections he could remain until January 3, 1995 at the Congress. In this time were, among others, the end of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. In 1994 he abandoned a bid again. He died on June 18, 2005 in Austin.
