Jaap de Hoop Scheffer

Jakob Gijsbert ( Jaap ) de Hoop Scheffer ( born April 3, 1948 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch politician. He worked from 2004 to July 2009, the NATO Secretary General.

Life

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer studied law at Leiden University. After his studies he did his military service with the Koninklijke Luchtmacht, at the end as a reserve officer. Following Scheffer worked from 1976 to 1986 the Dutch Foreign Office, where he was stationed, the first two years at Dutch Embassy in Ghana. After Scheffer moved to 1980 as a member of the Dutch delegation to the NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

1982 Scheffer, who had listened to until then Democraten 66, a member of the Christian Democratisch Appèl for which he entered in 1986 as a spokesman for Foreign Affairs in the Second Chamber of the States General was. Between 1997 and 2001, Scheffer was Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House and took over the party leadership. Of 22 July 2002 to 3 December 2003, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs (Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken ) conducted by the CDA government.

On 5 January 2004, De Hoop Scheffer went to the him transferred from 1 January 2004 the Office of the NATO Secretary General. In his inaugural speech, he saw the future main tasks of the Alliance in cooperation with the European Union as well as in peacekeeping in Afghanistan. He was replaced by former Danish Prime Minister Fogh Anders Rasmussen as Secretary General of the defense alliance on August 1, 2009.

Since September 2009 he is the owner of the named after Pieter Kooijmans Kooijmans Chair for Peace, Justice and Security at the University of Leiden.

De Hoop Scheffer has excellent knowledge of German.
