JabRef

JabRef is a free reference management program that uses the BibTeX format, which is the standard format for bibliographic databases for LaTeX. JabRef provides an interface for editing BibTeX files, for importing data from online scientific databases and for managing and searching BibTeX files.

JabRef is released under the GNU General Public License. The application is written in Java and is maintained for both Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

History

The first version of JabRef was released in 2003 after the authors of BibKeeper ( Morten O. Alver ) and JBibtexManager ( Nizar Batada ) had decided to merge their projects.

Functions

JabRef provides the following functions:

  • Creates BibTeX -compatible output
  • Easily edit, search, and view items
  • Contemporary grouping to organize entries based on fixed preferences or by searching for key words (also using regular expressions )
  • Automatic generation of the BibTeX key, formatting user-configurable
  • Direct Search and download from PubMed and IEEEXplore. Direct download from CiteSeer.
  • Export to standard formats such as DocBook, HTML, Office Open XML, OpenOffice.org and customizable by the user export filters
  • Can be links to external resources ( web, pdf or ps files, DOI numbers) opened with a single click ( search relevant links can be created automatically )
  • Can be used with literature references in batch mode without a graphical user interface to convert your files
  • Since version 2.4beta1 exists a general plug- in - system ( on the Java Plugin Framework based ), the new import / export filters, connections to various text programs export formatter and general functions that can be provided by the user allows.
