Jack Rosenthal

Jack Morris Rosenthal CBE ( born September 8, 1931 in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, † 29 May 2004) was a British playwright and screenwriter.

Biography

After school he studied at the University of Sheffield and joined after graduating a year after its founding in 1956 in the advertising department of a Granada Television.

In 1961 he became an author at the television series Coronation Street, and wrote there until 1969, the screenplays for more than 150 episodes. He also wrote articles for the influential satirical program That Was The Week That Was the BBC ( 1963) and was also also the spiritual father of the television series The Lovers! (1970).

Among his warm, witty television shows, dramatized story about real life, nostalgia wartime and domestic Jewish works which awarded the BAFTA Award The Evacuees (1975 ), Barmitzvah Boy (1976 ), Spend, Spend, Spend (1977 ) and London 's Burning (1986). His later work for television includes Wide - Eyed and Legless ( 1993) and Moving Story ( 1994). In his classic comedy drama Ready When You Are, Mr McGill played alongside Amanda Holden and Bill Nighy Tom Courtenay.

In addition, Rosenthal, who was married to the writer and actress Maureen Lipman wrote, but also the screenplays for movies like Lucky Star (1980 ) and together with Barbra Streisand Yentl of (1983). In 1983, he also wrote the screenplay for the film The lieutenant and his judge on the book by Maria Fagyas in which it came to the affair of the Lieutenant Adolf Hofrichter.

Among his most important stage works include Smash! (1981 ) and Our Gracie (1983). Even his 2006 posthumously published memoirs, which he co-authored with his wife, he wrote a drama entitled Jack Rosenthal: An Autobiography in Sicx acts.

In 1994 he was also awarded as the best author by the British Comedy Award. In addition, he in 1994 was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
