Jack Tworkov

Jack Tworkov ( born August 15, 1900 in Biała Podlaska near Lublin, General Warsaw, Russian Empire, † September 4, 1982 in Provincetown, Massachusetts ) was an American painter of Polish descent.

Jack Tworkov belonged to the known exponents of Abstract Expressionism.

Tworkov emigrated age of 13 in 1913 in the United States.

He studied from 1920 to 1923 at Columbia University in New York and from 1923 to 1925 at the Art Students ' League and at the National Academy of Design. End of the 20s, in the period of depression, he meets the artist Willem de Kooning and other representatives of Abstract Expressionism know. Together they founded the " New York School ".

Jack Tworkov was a teacher at several American colleges and universities. These include the American University, the Black Mountain College in North Carolina, Queens College, the Pratt Institute in Manhattan (New York City ), the University of Minnesota and Yale University. At Yale, he was head of the art department ( "Art Department" ) By 1963 until 1969.

Tworkov belonged, together with Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning to the " action painters " (Action painters ) of the Abstract Expressionism of the 40s and 50s. His paintings of this period is marked by expressive brushstrokes. Later, in the 60s, straight lines and geometric structures are pure colors characteristic of his images.

In 1959, Jack was Tworkov participated in the documenta II in Kassel.

Jack Tworkov died on 4 September 1982 in Provincetown in the state of Massachusetts.
