Jacob of Mies

Jakobellus of Mies ( also Jacobellus by Mies; Jakob / Jacob of Mies; Czech Jakoubek ze Stříbra; Latin Jacobus de Misa, also Jacobus Bohemus, Jacobus de Misa Bohanus; * about 1372 Mies; † August 9, 1429 in Prague) was a Hussite priest and writer.

Life

Jakobellus Mies lived for several years in Minoritenkloster in Mies. Later, he studied theology at Charles University, where he became friends with the reformer Jan Hus. In 1393 he acquired the academic degree of bachelor. After he was master in 1397, he taught at the university. In 1402 he was ordained a priest in 1407 and priest at St. Michael's Church in the Old Town. There he handed the chalice as one of the first believers.

At a synod in February 1413 he refused the mediation efforts of King Wenceslas IV from between Hus and the Catholic Church. With his raised at the Council of Constance in the trial of Jan Hus demand, the Lord's Supper future rich in both forms, he could not prevail. Nevertheless, she found in Bohemia soon widely disseminated. In defense of the lay chalice he was initially supported by John of Pribram, who rose to be the leader of the conservative- Utraquist University Master later. 1417 Jakobellus pleaded in a defense against Simon Tišnov for the children communion.

Since 1419 Jakobellus preached by Mies in the Bethlehem Chapel. In the conflicts between the Utraquists and radical Hussites he stood on the side of temperate Utraquists. In 1420 he represented in a meeting held at the University of disputation his interpretation of the Last Supper with such success that several parishes introduced the chalice. In response, the excommunication was imposed on him.

Along with Johann von Seelau, John of Pribram and Prokop of Pilsen Jakobellus belonged to a body that defended the doctrine of the Hussites. On one of them on November 12, 1421 appointed meeting, he turned against the radical ideas of John of Seelau, whom he accused, therefore, on 7 March 1422.

He defended the thesis that it was quite rightfully, to defend the Word of God with the sword. This thesis took on the encampments and thus justified their military trains. This provoked further clashes with Petr Chelčický who rejected any violence.

Jakobellus Mies wrote under his Latinized name " Jacobus de Misa " has written extensively on Utraquist teaching. They were partially edited by Paul of Bydžov, who himself had written several Utraquist defenses.
