Jacob Sloat Fassett

Jacob Sloat Fassett ( born November 13, 1853 in Elmira, New York, † April 21, 1924 in Vancouver, Canada ) was an American politician. Between 1905 and 1911 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jacob Fassett attended the common schools and then studied until 1875 at the University of Rochester. After a subsequent law degree in 1878 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Elmira to work in this profession. In the years 1878 and 1879, he was district attorney in the local Chemung County. At the time he acquired the newspaper Elmira Daily Advertiser, which remained in his possession until 1896. Between 1879 and 1882 he studied at the University of Heidelberg. After his return to Elmira in 1882, he practiced as a lawyer again. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1884 and 1891 he was a member of the Senate of New York, which he was president from 1889 to 1891. In the years 1880, 1892 and 1916, he participated as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. From 1888 to 1892 he served as secretary member of the Republican National Committee. In 1891 he ran for the governorship of New York, but was defeated by Democrat Roswell P. Flower. In August and September this year, he headed for a few weeks, the customs authority in New York Harbor. In 1904 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state.

In the congressional elections of 1904 Fassett in the 33rd electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles W. Gillet on March 4, 1905. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1911 three legislative periods. In 1910 he was not re-affirmed. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Jacob Fassett worked in Elmira in the banking industry and in the lumber business. He also invested in the Asian region, especially in mining. In 1918 he was chairman of the Republican Advisory Convention. He died on April 21, 1924 on his way home from a business trip to Japan in Vancouver and was buried in Elmira.
