Jacob van Oost

Jacob van Oost the Elder ( * around 1600 in Bruges, † 1671 in Bruges ) was a Flemish painter of the Baroque in Bruges. His oeuvre includes historical and portrait paintings.

Life and work

On January 19, 1619 was Jacob van Oost as an apprentice of his brother Franz van Oost (1618 free master in Bruges, † 1625 ) listed in the Bruges painters' guild. His early works include copies of the paintings of Jan van Eyck and Peter Paul Rubens, who were in 1857 partly as originals. In 1621 he was appointed as an independent master. At the moment, he studied in the 20s in Italy, influenced by Carravaggio works Hannibal / Annibale Carracci. After his return he became a sought-after 1630 contract artist for portraits, historical paintings and altarpieces. In 1633, the dean of guild signs found his election as leader instead. His students included, among others his sons Jacob van Oost the Younger, who continued the school of his father and Willem van Oost ( ~ March 8, 1651 in Bruges, † August 31, 1866 ibid ), the painter and Dominican lay brother was.

After his Rubens copies he came to his own style in dark and clayey overall attitude. His late work from 1660 consists of blackish toned works. His paintings can be found in religious institutions and collections in Bruges, as well as in the Belgian private property and in the following museums of Bergues, Berlin, Brussels, Caen, Dijon, Dunkerque, Leningrad, Lille, London, Lyon, New York City ( Histor.Soc. Cat 1903, Metropolitan Museum ), Ostend, Paris, Tournai, Valenciennes and Vienna.
