Jacques Brotchi
Jacques Brotchi ( born August 11, 1942 in Liège ) is a Belgian neurosurgeon and politician.
Life
Brotchi graduated in 1967 his medical studies at the University of Liege and then specialized in neurosurgery professor at Bonnal, his deputy, he was until 1981. In 1981 he was commissioned to the neurosurgical department of the Erasmus Hospital of the Université Libre de Bruxelles build, of which he held until 2007. He was also a professor at the ULB and held there until his retirement in October 2007, the Department of Neurosurgery.
From 1997 to 2001 he headed the Working Group for Education of the World Federation of Neurosurgeons ( WFNS ). Here he sat down one particularly for the improvement of technical education in the developing countries. He was president of the Belgian Society of Neurosurgery, and the " Société de Langue Française de Neurosurgery " whose activities cover all French-speaking countries.
As of June 2005, he was appointed for a term of four years as Chairman of the World Federation of Neurosurgeons. He has received numerous Belgian and international awards, he is a member of the Académie Française de Chirurgie and the American Academy of Neurological Surgery ( AANS ), which it in 2004 "Honorary Member " appointed - the highest since 1997 and no longer awarded award of this institution.
Political career
After his co-optation in the Belgian Senate, he sat down primarily for medical issues a. So he founded the Senate Commission on Bioethics and was author of an intense Senate debate on passive smoking, with the aim to prohibit smoking in restaurants and sports canteens.
In 2006 he was elected to the city council where he lives Uccle. In July 2007 for a second term (2007-2011) was confirmed as a senator.
