Jacques de Claeuw

Jacques de Adolphsz Claeuw ( MAY 1623 Dordrecht, † probably after November 7, 1694 Leiden) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque.

Claeuw was the father of the painter Adriaen de Gryff and 1642 co-founded the painters' guild in Dordrecht. About his background and education is not known. Stylistically, his early works are close to the pictures of Abraham van Beijeren, so that training appears to be possible in the area. Around 1646 it must be moved to The Hague, where he was admitted to the local painters' guild on 15 July of the same year. He was also a member of the shooting. In April 1646 were at a conference organized in the city auction, probably offered because of financial difficulties, 25 painted pictures of him and sold at prices 3-10 guilders. On April 11, 1649 he married his first wife, Maria van Goyen, a daughter of the landscape painter Jan van Goyen. Soon after the marriage, he must be in acute need of money again, since 1651 several prominent citizens, including his father in law, took off a surety for him. In the same year he moved to Leiden, where he joined on 23 September of the local guild of painters. Died in 1662 his first wife, with whom he had eight children. On September 7, 1663, he married Maria de Cherepy. 1666 Claeuw was last mentioned as a member of the Leiden Archers. In the same year he moved to Zeeland, where he probably spent the next few years. After a among other Haerlem ° A signed and dated 1687 Judging " Vanitas ", he could have stayed in the same year in Haarlem. Probably against 1689, but no later than 1694 he was back in suffering detectable, where he is the last time documented on 7 November as a witness to a christening at his son Adriaen. He probably died shortly thereafter.

Claeuw seems to have mainly painted still lifes and a few animal representations. In his early works he was based mainly on the dark, almost monochromatic color scheme of acting Abraham van Beijeren. In his later years, he remained true to the style van Beijerens loyal, but was bold in color and painted with colorful vigorous strokes. In addition to numerous vanitas still lifes, he also painted a number of fruit and hunting still life and flower pieces. Some ascribed genre -like images are believed to be early works of his son Adriaen or collective works of the two artists.
