Jacques Le Goff

Jacques Le Goff ( born January 1, 1924 in Toulon, † April 1, 2014 in Paris) was a French historian. The expert on the history of the European Middle Ages ( Medieval Studies ) belonged to the so-called Annales school.

Life

Le Goff, son of a teacher, visited schools in Toulon and Marseilles, and to prepare for studying at the grandes écoles the Lycée Louis -le- Grand in Paris. There he took in 1945 on the study of history at the École Normale Supérieure, which ended in 1950 with the Agrégation (degree with teaching license at a high school ) in history. Further stations were: a study at the Charles University in Prague, 1951/52, a post -graduate studies at the University of Oxford ( Lincoln College), 1952/53, a member of the École française de Rome, from 1954 assistant at the University of Lille, 1958 Research Fellow ( attaché de Recherches ) at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ).

In 1960 he went to Fernand Braudel to the sixth section of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, where he became professor in 1962. He succeeded Braudel as head of the Section in 1972 and remained so even than this in 1975 under the name École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales ( EHESS ) an independent institution was, until his retirement in 1977. He held further courses until the seventieth birthday.

From 1967 he was co-editor of the journal Annales, the journalistic organ of the Annales school.
