Jacques Nguyễn Văn Mầu

Jacques Nguyen Van Mau ( born January 22, 1914 in Ba Ria, Ba Ria- Vung Tau Province, Vietnam; † 31 January 2013) was a Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Vinh Long Vietnam. Its name combines Western names tradition (Jacques as a first name before the family name Nguyen ) with Vietnamese ( Van Mau as a personal name stands behind the family name ).

Life

Jacques Nguyen Van Mau entered the minor seminary of Saigon at the age of 12 years. He received on 21 September 1940, the ordination. He was active in pastoral ministry in Bến Go (1940 /43) and Cái Thia (1943 /46) in the Apostolic Vicariate of Saigon. From 1946 to 1949 he was vicar in Côn Đạo, an isolated island group in the South China Sea, south of Vietnam's mainland. From 1948 to 1955 he worked in the dioceses Ho Bảo Lộc, Don Duong, Da Lạt and Vung Tau. From 1955 to 1960 he was a professor at the seminary Joseph of Nazareth ( Thánh Giuse ). After a Vicariate for the poor, he was from 1960 to 1968 rector of the seminary in Saigon.

1968 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Vinh Long. The episcopal ordination on 12 September 1968 in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon gave him Archbishop Angelo Palmas, the then Apostolic Delegate in Vietnam; Co-consecrators were Paul Nguyen Van Binh, Archbishop of Saigon, and his predecessor Antoine Nguyên Van Thien. His episcopal motto was Amor et Labor.

2001 his age-related resignation by Pope John Paul II was granted; and was succeeded by Thomas Nguyen Van Tan.
