Jacques Wallage

Jacques Wallage ( born September 27, 1946 in Apeldoorn) is a Dutch politician. He is a member of the Social Democratic Partij van de Arbeid ( PvdA).

Life

Wallage was from 1972 to 1981 and Assistant Secretary from 1998 to 2009 mayor of the city of Groningen and was replaced by Peter Rehwinkel.

He was born in Apeldoorn in the middle of the Netherlands. Later his family moved to Groningen, in northern Holland. He comes from a middle- Jewish family and grew up in Groningen and studied there. He joined his party in 1964.

From 1981 to 1989 and from 1994 to 1998 he was a member of the Second Chamber. In the elections of 1994, he was campaign manager of his party and from 1989 to 1994 Secretary of State.

Since 2009 Wallage is Honorary Professor at the University of Groningen.
