The Jagala Waterfall (Estonian Jagala juga ) is the largest natural waterfall in Estonia.

Description

The Jagala Waterfall is located on the lower reaches of the river in the municipality Jagala Jõelähtme, about 25 km east of Tallinn. The waterfall is approximately 3 km upstream of the mouth of the river in the Baltic Sea.

The Jagala Waterfall is 7.8 to 8.1 m high and 50 m wide. By the force of the water from its edge limestone is aborted every year by about 3 cm. Especially in spring and in autumn, when the river carries a lot of water, and in winter, when the waterfall ( partial) freezes, the viewer itself offers an impressive picture.

History

The waterfall was popularly known Joarüngas. He was probably in pre-Christian times a cultic place. Around 1240 a water mill is already mentioned in a document which still can be found on a map of 1688. From 1917 until shortly after the end of World War II were close to the waterfall, a powerhouse and a cellulose factory.

The waterfall and the surrounding area were in 1978 some of the venues that chose Andrei Tarkovsky for his film Stalker.
