Jagdish Bhagwati

Jagdish Natwarlal Bhagwati ( born July 26, 1934 in Bombay ) is an Indian economist. He is currently Professor of Politics and Economics at Columbia University.

Biography

1956 Bhagwati concluded his studies with a Bachelor 's degree in field of economics at St John 's College from. He gained his doctorate in 1967 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1968 to 1980, Bhagwati Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1971, Bhagwati the journal Journal of International Economics, 1989, he founded also the journal Economics & Politics.

From 1991 to 1993 he was Economic Policy Advisor to the Director General of the GATT,. In 2000 he was a consultant for the United Nations and globalization issues in 2001 Advisor to the Director General of the WTO. He was also a 2000 co-signer in the action against the American Enterprise Institute, in its view, too many regulations of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

In January 2004, published Bhagwati, In Defense of Globalization (English: In Defense of Globalization ). In this book he argues that the globalization process has a human face and it was necessary to present this face acceptable in public. In business circles he was praised in particular for its view, humorous counterarguments against frequently used by critics of globalization criticisms. Bhagwati believes that the globalization of many critics will blamed for things they did not even go into debt.

In May 2004, Bhagwati participants was the Copenhagen Consensus. He is currently working in the academic advisory board of Human Rights Watch ( Asia) and the Centre for Civil Society. He is also a member of the U.S. think tank Council on Foreign Relations. Since 2006, he has been awarded the " Order of the Rising Sun ".

On 16 June 2010 Bhagwati received an Honorary Doctorate of the Faculty of Economics at the Free University of Berlin.

Family

Bhagwati is married to Padma Desai. The brother of Jagdish Bhagwati, Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati, is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India and Bhagwati's niece Pallavi Shroff, is the manager of a large law firm in India.
