Jaguar XJ ( Mark I ) refers to the first generation of British luxury sedan Jaguar XJ. Introduced in 1968, the vehicle was with the Series II and 1979 respectively subjected facelift in 1973 with the Series III and a total built until 1992.

The Jaguar XJ was the last draft of the founder of the company Jaguar, Sir William Lyons. On September 26, 1968, the XJ 6 was introduced with 2.8 and 4.2 liters of displacement on the occasion of the Paris Salon. In 1972, the long-awaited XJ 12 added with 5.3 liter displacement and was for 15 years the only twelve-cylinder sedan on the market. The presented in 1973 Series II differed from its predecessor by the higher gerückten front bumper, in the field of fire wall newly designed bodyshell and the all-new heating and ventilation system with automatic climate control. The XJ 12 1975 received a fuel injection. The two-door coupe XJ XJ 4.2 C and 5.3 C enriched to 1977, the model range. The Series III from 1979 stood out with a redesigned roofline reinforced rubber bumpers and an injection system for the 4.2 liter engine. Of these three series emerged from 1968 to 1992 a total of over 400,000 copies. The names XJ XJ 6 and 12 were retained for the successor to the internal codes XJ40, XJ81, X300 and X330. The abbreviation XJ was also part of the name of the following model series X308 and X350.

XJ Series I (1968 to 1973)

Daimler Sovereign (1972 )

The Jaguar XJ 6 replaced from September 1968, the first models 340, the S-Type and the 420, the 240, the Daimler V8 250, Daimler Sovereign (Daimler version of the 420 ) and the 420 G were initially producing.

The XJ 6 made use of the famous XK- line six-cylinder engine with 4.2 liters of displacement and a new short-stroke version of this engine with 2.8 liter displacement. As with the 420 two carburetors were provided, so that a performance with 245 or 180 bhp was realistic. Jaguar was the first time the power is on even after the DIN standard: 186 and 149 hp ( 136/109 kW). The top speed was 205 km / h ( 4.2 l manual switch with overdrive ) and 180 km / h ( 2.8 l manual switch with overdrive ). Over a four-speed manual transmission - with optional electrically switchable overdrive Laycock de Normanville - or on request via a three -speed automatic transmission from Borg - Warner, the rear wheels were driven. A limited slip differential was the 4.2 Litre optionally available in some countries (eg Switzerland ) with standard equipment. The hydraulic brake system with two brake circuits decreed forward three-piston calipers Girling. Dunlop had developed specifically for the XJ 6 a new radial tires, the SP Sport in size E70 VR 15 ( corresponding to the size 205/70VR15 ).

From 2.8 Litre easy execution was initially listed in the brochures without power steering and without center armrest between the front seats (probably but no such vehicle was actually delivered ) and another called de Luxe, their equipment corresponded to 4.2.

In the fall of 1969, Jaguar introduced the Daimler versions of the XJ 6 before called Sovereign Sovereign 2.8 and 4.2, which replaced both the Daimler 250 V8 and the former Daimler Sovereign. Shortly before the production of the Jaguar 240 was set. In 1970, the production of the 420 G expired, remained the XJ 6 as the only sedan series at Jaguar / Daimler (apart from the state carriage DS 420).

In 1972, the XJ 12 added to the sister model Daimler Double -Six. Double -Six was already the name of the first twelve- cylinder from Daimler in the late twenties. XJ 12 and Double -Six possessed the same 5.3 liter twelve- cylinder and the internally ventilated front discs as the E-Type V12. Engine performance was given with 253 hp DIN (186 kW). There was only one month later, the premiere of the most luxurious Daimler Double -Six Vanden Plas with a longer wheelbase. The versions XJ 6 4.2, Daimler Sovereign 4.2 and Jaguar XJ 12 L were available on the domestic market from autumn 1972 with the longer wheelbase.

From the Series I 98 343 units were built until 1973 because of new American rules, which made a higher mounted front bumper compulsory, the Series II was launched.

XJ Series II ( 1973-1979 )

In September 1973, was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main, the XJ Series II, which was available in both short and long wheelbase four-door sedan. Later, a two-door version was added, which was offered only briefly and temporarily in motorsport was used.

Limousine

The following Series II sedan variants were available:

  • Jaguar XJ 6 2.8 Litre ( short wheelbase, for only a few export markets )
  • Jaguar XJ 6 4.2 Litre ( short wheelbase )
  • Daimler Sovereign 4.2 ( short wheelbase )

The 4.2 liter engine produced very high due to compression of returned only 172 DIN hp, in contrast to the early Series I with 186 hp DIN (126 kW instead of 136 ). In the course of ever more numerous observations of overdrive was standard equipment.

In the fall of 1974, the production of sedans was adjusted with a short wheelbase. Added to this was instead of Daimler Vanden Plas 4.2 with standard automatic switch as extra-luxurious version of the Sovereign LWB further prepared.

The performance of the V12 was raised in the spring of 1975 through the introduction of the D -Jetronic injection system, Lucas had redesigned to meet the needs of a twelve cylinder engine from 253 to 287 hp DIN (ie from 186 to 211 kW). At the same time, a new 3.4 -liter six- cylinder with 161 hp DIN (118 kW) as versions was introduced XJ 3.4 and Daimler Sovereign 3.4 (both with long wheelbase ). The other Jaguar model designations changed outside of the U.S. in XJ XJ 4.2 and 5.3.

Due to more stringent emission regulations in the USA there was offered in May 1978, fuel injection, the 4.2-liter. Total to February 1979 91.227 vehicles emerged Series II; of which 14,226 vehicles were delivered to the twelve-cylinder engine.

Little known is that the models Jaguar XJ6 and XJ12 Jaguars were assembled from 1970 to 1981 by the Jaguar Cars of South Africa in South Africa. He got there a separate color palette. A specially composed for the South African model was the XJ6 Executive, the kind of ' re - jaguarisierte " version of the Daimler Sovereign 4.2 showed.

The coupe XJ -C

Already at the IAA 1973 the new XJ Coupe was announced as safe attractive variant of the Series II, but until 1975 it could as

  • XJ 4.2 C
  • Daimler Sovereign Two - Door
  • XJ 5.3 C
  • Daimler Double - Six Two - Door

Go into series production. The frameless side windows of this vehicle, between which the B-pillars entirely accounted for the sake of appearance, get rid of annoying wind noise, turned out to be very difficult technical challenge. Production of the coupe was discontinued in November 1977 - probably an attempt to revive the initially weak demand for the first presented in 1975 sports coupe XJ -S something. During this time, the production of the Daimler Sovereign 3.4 has ended. Since the spring of 1977 a GM three-speed automatic ( Turbo Hydra-Matic 400) was installed in the twelve cylinders.

The XJ -C in motorsport

The two-door XJ- C was used in the second half of the 1970s factory in touring car racing. British Leyland commissioned the established tuning operation Broadspeed with the design and manufacture specially revised car. The vehicles were equipped with the 5.3 liter twelve- cylinder engine, which used standard camshafts and tappets, but revised pistons began. The maximum power was reached at 8,000 revolutions per minute, the maximum torque at 5750 revolutions. Power transmission was via a manual gearbox with modified translations. Suspension, exhaust system and steering were also adjusted the racing needs. Broadspeed put forth a total of four copies of the sports car. They were classified as Group 2 vehicles and were driven in various touring car events by Derek Bell, David Hobbs, Andy Rouse and Steve Thompson in 1976 and 1977. The most remarkable result achieved Bell and Hobbs at the conference organized by the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy at Silverstone in 1976, where they went from pole position on the grid and drove the fastest lap time. The race they could not finish, however, since its Jaguar failed prematurely due to a puncture.

XJ Series III (1979 to 1992)

Jaguar Sovereign 4.2

In March 1979, the third generation of the Jaguar XJ was introduced in Scotland, which had been revised for style by Pininfarina. The Series III was recognized by the larger window areas and the rubber- reinforced bumpers. At 4.2, the carburetor was now generally replaced by an injection; he carried now 205 DIN hp instead last 168 hp DIN (151 kW instead of 124 ).

While Daimler versions were previously manufactured almost exclusively for the UK market, they were now offered in continental Europe. The range of models designed like (all sedans on long wheelbase ) follows:

  • Jaguar XJ 6 3.4
  • Jaguar XJ 6 4.2
  • Daimler Sovereign
  • Daimler Vanden Plas 4.2 (only for UK)
  • Jaguar XJ 12 5.3
  • Daimler Double Six (now without the hyphen )
  • Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas

1981 got the V12 a new cylinder head after the Swiss Michael May fireball technology, which lowered the consumption and HE was ( for high efficiency) called. The performance has now been listed with 295 hp DIN (217 kW). For the six-cylinder, there was a five-speed manual transmission, but it was available only from about 1982.

In the fall of 1982, the model program for Continental Europe has been - with redesigned center console - fundamentally restructured, as the classier Daimler versions threatened with their sales figures to overtake the simpler Jaguar models. The Daimler Sovereign was the Jaguar Sovereign 4.2, Daimler Double Six for Jaguar Sovereign HE and Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas for Jaguar Vanden Plas HE For Switzerland, came to the XJ 6 4.2 added a special version with improved features, called XJ 6 Swiss added. In America, where only the XJ 6 (and also in Canada, the XJ 12) was available, a Jaguar Vanden Plas joined added posh alternative. In the U.S., where the XJ was 12 due to the penalty tax on vehicles not exported with high consumption, there was latter in the 4.2 liter version in Canada with the V12 engine.

A year later, in the fall of 1983, then, to a similar renaming in England, where the Daimler Sovereign and Daimler Double Six as now Jaguar Sovereign 4.2 and Jaguar Sovereign HE took were expelled. The name Daimler Double Six was for the former top model further use, as Jaguar had committed in the course of privatization compared with Austin Rover, not to use the name Vanden Plas in England and Europe.

The end of 1985, Jaguar decided that designation HE on all models to be replaced by the more understandable term " V12 ". In continental Europe, the Jaguar Vanden Plas HE was now offered as Daimler Double Six. The area around shift lever or gear selector got a dashboard to fit selected wood veneer instead of the previous black vinyl Bezuges on all models.

The production of the XJ 6 was stopped in 1986, the deliveries were continued in the U.S. until early 1987. The successor could be presented there until May 1987. The Series III was, however, continued to be produced with a V12 engine until 1992 ( on the background to see XJ40 ). The XJ 12/Daimler Double Six was for the model year 1990 Revised in 1989 once more extensive and ( previously only available on request ) equipped among other things with a Bosch ABS and an emission control device Kat. At the end of the production year 1991, the production of no longer provided with the nickname Sovereign simpler V12 has been discontinued. The last Daimler Double Six Series III ran on 30 November 1992 after a total of 177 668 copies of the tape. Overall, it brought the XJ series was then 404 243 copies - more than any other Jaguar series before.

Performance of the Jaguar XJ V12

The Jaguar XJ V12 as its sister model Daimler Double Six produced until 1992. The last vehicles were called Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas 12 Limited Edition. These were the last 100 produced automobiles. Customers of the left-hand drive vehicles was Jaguar Canada.
