Jakob Felsing

( George) Jacob Felsing ( born July 22, 1802 in Darmstadt, † June 9, 1883 in Darmstadt) was an engraver and Copper printer.

Life

Georg Jakob Felsing, son of the engraver and printer Johann Conrad Felsing and brother of Johann Heinrich Felsing, who also took this career.

He was a pupil of his father and after his death in 1819 at Georg Moller. Moller taught him in his sovereign, Louis I of Hesse, a stipend of 500 florins. Ludwig I had been promoted as Prince his father. Felsing went in 1822 to the Academy of Fine Arts ( Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ), Milan, where at that time flourished an exquisite engraving school under Giuseppe Longhi. There he met Ernst Fries and Johann Heinrich von Dannecker know.

In 1823 he wins the silver medal of the Academy for the representation of the colossal head of Lucius Verus, after him his ruler extended the scholarship. He makes numerous trips in northern Italy. In 1828 he wins with the engraving Gesú all'Orto after Carlo Dolci, the Gold Medal of the Academy. In 1829 he traveled to Rome and Naples, where he remained one year and then go back to Florence, where he was the Academy for " professore di prima ClassA " appoint.

In 1832 he returned to Darmstadt, where he gets a job as a court engraver. In 1836 he married a friend of his sister and takes in the subsequent period numerous trips. In 1854, he also obtained the title of professor in Darmstadt. He stabbed numerous works of the Düsseldorf School in copper. 1866 his wife died Auguste. This, and the realization that the profession of reproductive engraver was always less artistically recognized as adequate, and was slowly replaced by the photograph and extinction was foreseeable, bring him in professional and artistic resignation. Therefore he laid in 1876 to chair the Darmstadt Kunstverein down, he held forty years.
