Jakub Schikaneder

Jakub Schikaneder (Czech: Jakub Schikanedr; born February 27, 1855 in Prague, † November 15, 1924 ) was a Czech painter.

Life

Schikaneder came from the family of a German tax collector. Despite the indigent circumstances of the family for him to study was made possible. One reason for this was the art of love of family, whose ancestors also belonged Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the libretto for Mozart's Magic Flute. After his studies 1871-1879 in Prague and Munich, he was involved with Emanuel Krescenc Liska at the facilities of the Royal Box at the National Theatre. These works would be lost in a fire in 1881. He then traveled through Europe, visited Germany, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and France. 1891-1923 he taught at the Prague School of Applied Arts. He was one of the admirers of the Munich school end of the 19th century.

Works

Schikaneder painted melancholy tinge pictures mostly with older, poor or outcast people. Other popular themes were the fall and winter, Prague corners, streets and river Vltava, usually at early evening or shrouded in fog. His first known work was the painting " Lollarde ".
