Jalgaon district

The district Jalgaon ( Marathi: जळगाव जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The town of Jalgaon is the administrative center of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 4,229,917 people.

History

From pre-Christian times to the year 1345, the area was - as the whole region - ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first known state was the Mauryan Empire, the last non-Muslim dynasty were the Yadava. After decades of paying tribute to Muslim rulers in northern India took place in 1345, the occupation by Muslim soldiers. After that ruled until 1795 various Muslim dynasties ( Bahmani, Deccan sultanates, the United Mughals and the Nizam of Hyderabad ). In the following nearly two decades, the area was under the rule of the Marathas. On 3 June 1818, the colonial era of the area with the handover began on the British East India Company after the defeat of the Marathas. The district was part of the region of Khandesh and was within the Bombay Presidency. This was in 1937 to the province of Bombay - until 1960 the state of Maharashtra was created. After the division of the district of Khandesh in 1906, today's Jalgaon district was named the East Khandesh (East Khandesh ). Since 21 October 1960, the district bears its present name.

Population

The urban population accounts for only 31.74 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. The Muslims are a significant minority. A smaller minority are the Buddhists. In 2001, of 3.68269 million inhabitants 3,049,368 Hindus ( 82.80 percent), 455 288 Muslims ( 12.36 percent) and 126,136 Buddhists ( 3.43 percent ).

Strongest town inhabitants of the district is the main town Jalgaon. Other important cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Bhusawal, Amalner, Chalisgaon, Chopda, Pachora, Parola, Dharangaon and Erandol.
