Jamaicans for Justice

Jamaicans for Justice is a Jamaican non-governmental organization based in Kingston, which works to strengthen the civil and human rights in Jamaica. It was founded by the doctor Carolyn Gomes in 1999 and is regarded as Jamaica's largest human rights organization.

Objectives and Methodology

Jamaicans for Justice refers to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their main demands are the equal treatment of all citizens before the Jamaican courts, the reduction of corruption, the curbing of illegal police violence and the elimination of discrimination. Play a central role in the equal rights of men and women and the decriminalization of homosexuality.

Jamaicans for Justice provides legal advice and legal aid to victims of state violence or injustice as unlawful arrests, unfair trials processes and violent attacks by security forces. Through an education program in schools, the organization wants to raise awareness of human rights. A special training it provides for applicants to the police force. In addition, it clarifies the weekly radio program The Community Lawyer to over civil rights issues. Jamaicans for Justice also operates lobbying the Jamaican government.

Jamaicans for Justice collaborates with various international organizations, including Amnesty International and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Awards

Jamaicans for Justice has received several international awards. 2002, the organization received the Human Rights Award of the City of Weimar. The founder Carolyn Gomes in 2008 was awarded the Human Rights Award of the United Nations.
