James Blish

James Blish (* May 23, 1921 in East Orange, New Jersey; † 29 July 1975 Henley-on -Thames ) was an American science fiction writer and critic.

Life and career

Blish studied microbiology at the University of Columbia.

He was in New York at the Fangruppe The Futurians, which also included Isaac Asimov, Frederik Pohl, Damon Knight and other SF writers.

His first short story published Blish 1940 ( Emergency Refueling ), the breakthrough, however, came only in the 1950s with its outstanding short stories, including Beep (1954 ) and A Work of Art (1956). He became one of the leading writers of the 1950s through the novel series Oakie and Pantropy. However, he also wrote action -oriented novels about Jack of Eagles (1952) and The Warriors of Day ( 1953).

His best known and most influential of the science fiction literary work is Cities in Flight (English: " The flying cities "), a (later) Summary of individual works "They Shall have stars ", "A Life for the Stars ," " Earthman Come Home "(engl.: " city between the planets " ) and" A Triumph of Time "aka " A Clash of Cymbals " ( listed in order of their action period), which is often referred to as the prototype of the genre of space opera.

His novel, A Case of Conscience 1958 was awarded the following year with the Hugo Award. His later works were, however, perhaps because of the occult themes, no great successes more. In the 1970s, Blish wrote rather second-rate entertainment literature, including titles for the Star Trek book series, which at this time was still of low quality.

Under the pseudonym William Atheling Jr. was Blish also known as an able critic of the SF. Under this name he published The Issue at Hand, a guide to writing not only of science fiction.
