James Charles Castle

James Charles Castle ( born September 25, 1899 in Garden Valley, Idaho; † 26 October 1977) was an American artist. Although Castle knew nothing about the art world outside this small community, was his work in parallel with the development of art history of the 20th century .. His work has been collected by major institutions. The Philadelphia Museum of Art organized a retrospective of his work, which could be seen as a traveling exhibition in the United States in 2008 and 2009. Castles plant entered the international arena with a larger exhibition in Madrid, Spain at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, 2011.

Biography

Castle was self-taught, of his life drawings, assemblages and books created. Castle was born completely deaf and it is not known to what extent he can read, write or sign language could. Castles artistic works were almost exclusively created with found materials such as discarded wrapping paper and mail as well as food packages of all kinds Castle mixed ink from soot from the wood stove and spit and applied this with homemade tools (including sharpened sticks or other had picked objects). His drawings vividly interiors, buildings, animals, landscapes and people is, was the basis of the rural farm his family in Garden Valley, as well as the architecture and landscapes of the places where he lived and he visited.
