James Crawford (jurist)

James Richard Crawford AC, SC, FBA, LLD ( born November 14, 1948 in Adelaide ) is an Australian lawyer, professor and lawyer (especially in the field of international law ). He is the current holder of the Whewell Chair for International Law at Cambridge University and a Fellow in Law from Jesus College, Cambridge. Previously, he was Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the same university.

Training

James Crawford studied at the University of Adelaide, where he a BA with a double major in Political Science and English History (1974 ) and a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) (1971 ) acquired. While studying in Adelaide he first came into contact with the law by the lecture at DP O'Connell, who was later appointed to the Chichele Professor of International Law at Oxford. Crawford followed him to Oxford un his doctorate there under the supervision of Ian Brownlie (1977).

Scientific career

Following his graduation, he returned to Australia and taught constitutional law and international law in Adelaide. In 1983 he was appointed professor of the local Adelaide University. In 1982 he followed a call by the Australian government and accepted a position within the Australian Law Reform Commission, which he held until 1984. He wrote a series of reports for the Australian Government, including the recognition of Aboriginal customary law of the immunity of states and on the reform of the Law of the Sea. In 1986, he accepted a professorship at the University of Sydney and took over the Challis Professor of International Law chip; 1990 to 1992 he was Dean of the Law Faculty.

In 1985, he became the youngest person of the modern age associate of the Institut de droit international, and in 1991 a full member.

In 1992 he returned to England and was Whewell Professor of International Law. His opponent in Oxford as Chichele Professor of Public International Law was his former PhD supervisor Ian Brownlie. From 1992 to 2001 he also was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations, for which he acted as Special Rapporteur on the topic of international law responsibility from 1997 to 2001. In addition, he was instrumental in the drafting of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. In 2000 he was also elected Fellor the British Academy. Since 1993 he has also been a judge at the Administrative Tribunal of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). His main areas of activity are constitutional law, maritime law, international arbitration, and various aspects of human rights. Since 2013 he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Hague Academy of International Law and in 2013 he gives the general course in international law within the summer program of the Academy.

In 1996 he took over the position of Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge University, which he held until 2003 and again from 2006 to 2010. Since 2010, Marc Weller is the director of the research institute. In 2003, he was the University of Cambridge also awarded the title of Doctor of Law ( LL.D. ). He also holds honorary doctorates from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne and the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Budapest. From the Law School of Columbia University, he was awarded the 2009 Wolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award, in 2010 he was awarded the Nessim Habif World Prize from the University of Geneva and in 2012, the highest award of the American Society of International Law, the Hudson Medal.

Private life

James Crawford is married since 1998 to his third marriage with a Polish expert on international law and has one son, James Jr. ( 1999). From 2 previous marriages, he has 4 daughters, Emily, Rebecca, Alexandra (1992) and Natasha (1994). His daughter, Dr. Emily Crawford is a post - doctoral student at the University of Sydney and a partner of the Sydney Centre for International ( SCIL ). She previously taught at the Law Faculty of the University of New South Wales. My thesis on the Unequal treatment of participants in armed conflicts was published in 2010 by Oxford University Press .. Crawfords other older daughter, Rebecca, is Director of the Ipsos Mackay Report. She changed her surname before she began her law studies in order to avoid comparisons with her eminent father.

Since 2004 he is a member of the editorial advisory board of the American Journal of International Law. He has published articles in, inter alia, International and Comparative Law Quarterly, dieAmerican Journal of International Law, dasBritish Yearbook of International Law, and other major magazines to international law.
