James Fitz-Allen Mitchell

Sir James Fitz -Allen Mitchell ( born May 15, 1931 in Bequia ) is a politician from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Biography

Mitchell, a cousin of three-time Prime Minister of St. Lucia Sir John George Melvin Compton, in 1966 first elected Members of Parliament. Between 1967 and 1972 he was Minister for trade, agriculture, tourism and work in the government of Chief Minister Robert Milton Cato.

After April 1972, the St. Vincent Labour Party ( SVLP ) Cato lost the elections against a run of Mitchell party alliance, Mitchell himself was premier. In December 1974, however, the SVLP succeeded in the early general elections a victory against Mitchell, making him Cato on December 8, 1974 as the Premier in turn replaced.

In 1975, Mitchell Chairman of the New Democratic Party (NDP ), which he led to victory in the elections of 1984. The NDP won it 9 of the 13 seats in the Legislative Assembly, so that Mitchell again follower of Cato as prime minister on 30 July 1984. It succeeded him win the following elections also. After his fourth consecutive re-election on June 15, 1998, he resigned after sixteen years of reign on 27 October 2000. The new prime minister was then Arnhim Ulric Eustace.

For his services he was Privy Councillor in 1985 and elevated to the peerage in 1995 and led since then the additional name sir.
