James G. March

James Gardner March ( born in 1928 in Cleveland, USA) is an American organizational theorist and Professor Emeritus of Management, Higher Education, Political Science and Sociology at Stanford University in California.

Life

Most recently, he was Professor of Management at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He joined in 1970 this university, where he taught until 1995.

He is considered a classic of organizational research and is one of the outstanding representatives of the behavioral science decision theory ( behavioral theory of the firm ). In his works, he was mainly involved in the decision-making practice in organizations. He received great attention by his criticism of prevailing thinking principles as the theory of the best choice.

He developed the so-called garbage can model of organization. Thus, decision-making processes depend on four factors:
