James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn

James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn KG, PC ( born January 21, 1811 in Mayfair, London, † October 31, 1885 in London ) was a Scottish nobleman and British statesman.

Life

James Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton, and his wife Harriet Douglas. He succeeded his grandfather John James Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn, 1818 as the 2nd Marquess of Abercorn.

He was Lord Chamberlain of the Prince Consort Albert, 1866-1868 under the Ministry Derby - Disraeli, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was on August 20, 1868 in the Irish Mail passenger on the journey from London to Holyhead road, where he wanted to take the ferry to Ireland. The Irish Mail accident that day when the serious rail accident at Abergele. James Hamilton was unhurt, as he sat in one of the rear car. He was raised to the Duke of Abercorn end of 1868. From 1874 to 1876 Hamilton was again Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Hamilton was major general of the king's guard of Scotland, a member of the Privy Council and Grand Master of the Masonic Order in Ireland. As the heir of the Hamiltons, he also claimed the 1548 James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, conferred title of Duke of Chatellerault, however in 1864 by Napoleon III. a native of an older, but female line William Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton was awarded. In 1881 he became Chancellor of the University of Ireland.

James Hamilton married in 1832 Louisa Jane ( 1812-1905 ), daughter of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford, with whom he had the following children:
