James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton

James Douglas - Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton, 1st Duke of Brandon KG, KT, ( November 11, 1658 *, † November 15, 1712 in London) was 4th Duke of Hamilton.

Life

James, Earl of Arran, eldest son of William Douglas, 1698, after his mother Anne had renounced the title Duke of Hamilton. He was also in 1711 the title of Duke of Brandon in the Peerage of Great Britain awarded but was not allowed to sit and vote in the House of Lords, which he could claim as a result.

The Union between England and Scotland he had initially fought, but later supported. During the reign of Queen Anne, he was one of the mainstays of the Party of the Stuarts in Scotland.

On November 15, 1712 took place in Hyde Park to a sword duel with the infamous Lord Hamilton for his frequent participation in duels Charles Mohun, 4th Baron Mohun. In this case, both duelists died. The seconds George Macartney and John Hamilton were charged with manslaughter because they did not prevent the cruel fight. The writer William Makepeace Thackeray has handled this story in his novel The History of Henry Esmond.

James Hamilton's brother Charles was appointed in 1688 to the Earl of Selkirk and inherited this title to his brother John, who thereby the founder of the line Hamilton Selkirk.

The Duke was married twice; first he was married to Anna, daughter of Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland, in a second marriage, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Digby Gerard, 5th Baron Gerard of Gerard's Bromley with whom he had the following surviving children:
