James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn

James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn KG ( born July 4, 1934 in London ) is a British nobleman and politician and served from 2001 to 2009, Lord Steward of the Household. Since 17 October 2012, he is Chancellor of the Order of the Garter.

Life

James Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn, and his wife Mary Catherine Crichton. He was educated at Eton and at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester and was awarded with the death of his grandfather, the courtesy title Marquess of Hamilton. He succeeded his father in 1979 as Duke of Abercorn.

From 1964 to 1970, the Duke member of the House of Commons for Fermanagh and South Tyrone for the Ulster Unionist Party. He is one of the largest landowners in Northern Ireland and has its headquarters in Baron Court in Omagh.

Progeny

The Duke married Alexandra Anastasia ( b. 1946 ), daughter of Harold Phillips, with whom he had the following children:

  • Sophia Alexandra ( b. 1973 )
  • Nicholas Edward ( b. 1979 )

Hamilton's father, James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn, was the grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales 's brother.
