James Philip Eagle

James Philip Eagle ( born August 10, 1837 Maury County, Tennessee, † December 19, 1904 in Little Rock, Arkansas ) was an American politician and 1889-1893 Governor of Arkansas.

Early years

James Eagle soon came with his parents to Arkansas. There, James attended the local schools. Between 1859 and 1861 he was sheriff in Prairie County. During the American Civil War, he fought on the side of the South and brought it to the Colonel ( Colonel). After the war he attended the Mississippi College. He had to cancel for health reasons but the school.

Political rise

Between 1873 and 1878, was Eagle MP in the House of Representatives from Arkansas. He was in 1875 even President of the House ( Speaker). Between 1880 and 1904 he was head of the Baptist church in Arkansas. In 1888 he was elected as a candidate of his Democratic Party as the new governor of Arkansas. In the context of this election time there were unsubstantiated rumors of electoral fraud.

Governor of Arkansas

James Eagle took up his new post on January 8, 1889. After a re-election in 1890, he could officiate as governor for four years. Main points of his tenure were a reform of the state prisons, improved education policy and the promotion of immigration to Arkansas. He campaigned for a fairer tax system and better control of the railroads. On the other hand, he introduced the segregation in Arkansas. As a first step had Schwarze traveling in separate compartments sit apart from whites. Racial segregation in Arkansas was generally exacerbated under his tenure. On the other hand, the governor supported the demands of the women 's rights movement for women's suffrage. An internal dispute within the Democratic Party was settled in his time.

Further CV

After the end of his tenure Eagle still remained active in his church. He was a member of a government committee from which he was dismissed by the Governor but Jefferson Davis after he had supported an opponent of Davis. James Eagle died in December 1904 of heart failure.
