James S. Cothran

James Sproull Cothran (* August 8, 1830 in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, † December 5, 1897 in New York City ) was an American politician. Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Cothran attended the common schools and then studied until 1852 at the University of Georgia in Athens. After studying law, he began to work as a lawyer. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the army of the Confederate States.

In the years 1876 and 1880 Cothran served as attorney for the eighth judicial district of South Carolina. Within the district, he worked 1881-1886 as a judge. Cothran was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1886, he was in the third constituency of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of D. Wyatt Aiken on March 4, 1887. After a re-election in 1888 he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1891 two legislative sessions. 1890 renounced Cothran on a bid again. He died on December 5, 1897 in New York.
