James Tully (philosopher)

James Hamilton Tully (* April 17, 1946 ) is a Canadian political scientist. His main topics are political philosophy, history of ideas, philosophy of law and the tension between liberal democracy and multiculturalism, where he dealt particularly with First Nations.

Life

James Tully earned his B. A. 1974 in History at the University of British Columbia and received his PhD in 1977 in political philosophy at the University of Cambridge. From 1977 to 1996 he taught Political Science and Philosophy at McGill University on the topic John Locke's theory of property in its intellectual context. At this time he was also consultant to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. From 1996 to 2001 he was a professor at the University of Victoria political science, law, philosophy and Indigenous Politics, 2001-2003 at the University of Toronto and since 2003 at the University of Victoria.

Tully publishes the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke, and is also editor of the book series Ideas in Context ( Cambridge University Press ) and the journal Political Theory. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Trudeau Foundation.

In 2010 he was awarded the Killam Prize.
