James W. Gerard

James Watson Gerard ( August 25, 1867 in Geneseo, New York, † September 6, 1951 in Southampton, Long Iceland ) was an American diplomat and jurist. From 1913 to 1917 he served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany.

1890 Gerard graduated Columbia University and in 1902 he joined the Columbia Law School. After that, he was for four years chairman of the Democratic campaign committee of New York County and served four years as a major in the National Guard of the State of New York.

In 1908 he received the office of a judge of the New York Supreme Court, which he held until 1911. In 1913 he was sent as an American ambassador to Berlin.

During his work abroad, the chairman of the Democratic Party in the state of New York implemented the National Convention in 1914 by nominating Gerards as candidates for the office of Senator for the state in Congress. When the internal party pretuning Gerard sat by, among others, against the then Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the subsequent election, however, Gerard was defeated by his Republican competitors.

1917 Gerard returned the occasion of the American entry into the war back to the States.

The George H. Doran Company of New York City published two memoirs, in which he talks about his experiences in Germany: "My Four Years in Germany" (1917 ) and "Face to Face with Kaiserism " (1918).
