James Whitmore

James Allen Whitmore ( born October 1, 1921 in White Plains, New York, † February 6, 2009 in Malibu, California ) was an award-winning American actor.

Life

Whitmore attended Yale University where he was a member of the fraternity Skull & Bones. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1948 he first appeared on Broadway. For his performance in the play Command Decision, he was honored with a Tony Award and a Theatre World Award. For his performance in the movie Boiler battle he was awarded in 1950 for Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Oscar. In the biographical drama film Give ' em Hell, Harry! Whitmore embodied in the leading role the former U.S. President Harry S. Truman. For this role he was nominated once again for Best Actor for an Oscar.

In addition to film and television roles he appeared in various productions on Broadway in the 1970s. Whitmore was in the course of his career as a guest star on various television shows such as Gunsmoke, The Invaders or Riptide. For his role in an episode of Justice Series Practice - The lawyers he received an Emmy Award in 2000. He had his last appearance in 2007 in a small supporting role in the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

In 2007, he supported the election campaign of Barack Obama. He died at the age of 87 years the consequences of a lung disease.

Whitmore was married four times, including 1971 to 1979 to actress Audra Lindley. From his first marriage (1947-1970) have three children. Born in 1948, son of James Whitmore Jr. has worked as a director and producer on TV.
