James William Abert
James W. Abert (* November 18, 1820 in Mount Holly, New Jersey; † August 10, 1897 ) was an American engineer officer and cartographer. He ran cartographic studies, especially in the area of today the U.S. state of Arkansas and the Canadian River. He took advantage, above all the knowledge of the Indians living there in order to develop a geographical overview of the region. In various expeditions of John Charles Fremont as a cartographer of the expedition group belonged to.
To him, the Abert Lake was named in the western United States to honor.
