Jan Akkerman

Guitarist Jan Akkerman (born 24 December 1946 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch rock and jazz guitarist.

Life

In the 1960s, he played in several formations ( including Brainbox ) before 1970 joined the group Focus. Together with the keyboardist and flute player Thijs van Leer and changing bass players and drummers, he took in the first half of the 1970s on several successful albums. 1971 came the single Hocus Pocus down to the 20th place in the UK and up to 9th place in the U.S. charts. At the turn of 1972/73 the single Sylvia reached the fourth place in the British charts.

1973 Akkerman was chosen by the British magazine Melody Maker to the world's best guitarists. The Dutch rock and blues singer Herman Brood played for a short time (1975 ) with Akkerman in the Flash & Dance Band.

Early 1976 he left Focus and began a solo career. On his numerous LPs and CDs he turned to different types of music to (among old English lute music, Latin American pieces for acoustic guitar or different varieties of jazz ), and has worked with numerous musicians ( including Kaz Lux, Claus Ogerman, Tom Barlage, Joachim Kühn or Maggie MacNeal, whose solo LP Fools Together he contributed an arrangement of the title Cream White Room ). In 1985, Akkerman with Thijs van Leer once an album titled Focus on. However, this also had little commercial success as his later solo projects.

2004/ 05 received Akkerman, who is still active in the studio and on stage, in recognition of his complete works by the Dutch Foundation Conamus the Golden Harp.
