Jan Baptist Weenix

Jan Baptist Weenix ( First Name, Giovanni Battista; surname also Weenincks, Weenincx, Weeninx ) (* 1621 in Amsterdam, † 1660 in Huis ter Mey, today Haarzuilens near Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age.

Life and work

Jan Baptist Weenix came as the son of the architect John Weenix in Amsterdam to the world. He had three sisters, one of whom married the youngest, Lijsbeth, the painter Barent Micker ( 1615-87 ). His brother, the painter Jan Christiaensz. Micker (1598-1664) in Amsterdam was possibly the first teacher of Jan Baptist Weenix. Documented is his training with Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht and later with Claes Cornelisz. Moeyaert in Amsterdam.

Jan Baptist Weenix married in 1639 Justina de Hondecoeter, daughter of the landscape painter Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter. Justina's brothers Gijsbert Gillisz. de Hondecoeter (1604-1653) and Niclaes Gillisz. de Hondecoeter (1607-1642) was also a landscape painter. Gijsbert Gillisz. Son Melchior de Hondecoeter was later also a pupil of Jan Baptist Weenix as his own son Jan Weenix.

From 1642 to 1647, Jan Baptist Weenix held on in Rome. Here he became a member of Bentveughels, a community of Dutch and Flemish painters. Jan Baptist Weenix called himself in Italy Giovanni Battista Weenix, but received due to their illnesses speech impediment of his fellow painters nicknamed rattle. His clients included, among others in Rome Pope Innocent X.. Upon his return to the Netherlands he was in 1649 a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Utrecht. He specialized from now on Italian landscapes with folk scenes, views of the Campagna with ruins, as well as on city and harbor views. But have also been created some portraits and hunting still life. Jan Baptist Weenix died in 1660 at the now defunct Wasserburg Huis ter Mey near Utrecht.
