Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen

Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen (* 1500 in Beverwijk, † 1559 in Brussels) was a Dutch painter, etcher, illustrator and designer wallpaper. He was active in Flanders and Spain.

January Cornelisz Vermeyen was probably a pupil of Jan Mabuse. At 1525 he became court painter to Margaret of Austria. He entered the service of Emperor Charles V, and accompanied him on his Tunis campaign in 1535. Vienna are his twelve great illustrations that portray the aforementioned train in water colors, and according to which as many carpets (now in Madrid and Schonbrunn Palace Vienna) were knitted. Other battle scenes are in Mansi Palace in Lucca ( Battle of Pavia, capture of Rome, Siege of Tunis ) and in the castle of Coburg. But the majority of his Church, Slaughter and cityscapes has perished. Vermeyen died in 1559 in Brussels. The Spaniards called him because of his long beard Juan de Mayo el Barbudo or Barbalonga.
