Jan Erik Kongshaug

Jan Erik Haug Kong ( born July 4, 1944 in Trondheim ) is a Norwegian sound engineer and jazz guitarist. He was known for his work for the label ECM.

Biography

From the house electrical engineer, began Kong Haug 1970 his decades of work for ECM on the album " Afric Pepper Bird " by Jan Garbarek. Since then he has worked in various studios such as New York's "Power Station" until 1984, the original Studio "Rainbow Studio " in Oslo opened. Since Kong Haug is often firmly associated in connection with this studio with ECM. Famous for its clarity so-called " ECM sound " which was influenced by him, as was a fixture in jazz. Meantime Kong Haug at hundreds of productions, more than half of the ECM recordings, responsible for the sound. Among them are musicians such as John Abercrombie, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Bill Frisell, Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Terje Rypdal, Eberhard Weber, and almost all the other long-term ECM musicians of distinction.

Even before his time as a sound engineer Kong Haug worked as accordion player, then as a jazz guitarist active. After leaving school, he played for a year on a cruise ship. During this time he learned out of necessity to play bass. After he had accompanied his compatriot Sven Nyhus on 15 albums he released in 1998 - not for ECM, but in which competitors ACT - his first album " The Other World ", to which he devoted himself to the Bebop as a quartet. 2005 followed the same occupation " All These Years ".
