Jan Schmidt-Garre

Jan Schmidt- Garre ( born June 18, 1962 in Munich) is a German director and producer.

Biography

Jan Schmidt- Garre studied from 1982 to 1986 Philosophy at the School of Philosophy of the Jesuits in Munich ( MA with a semiotic work to Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen ) and from 1984 to 1988 directing at the University of Television and Film in Munich, feature film department.

During school and his studies he worked as an assistant director and volunteer at the directors Rudolf Noelte, David Esrig, Joachim Herz and Harry Kupfer ( at the Salzburg Festival, the Bayreuth Festival, at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and at the Dresden State Opera ).

The conductor Sergiu Celibidache, he studied conducting and music theory in public courses and private lessons in Mainz, Munich and Paris.

In 1988, Schmidt- Garre founded the production company Pars Media, the topics of music and art acquired with documentary and feature films international reputation and has been awarded many prizes, among others with a nomination for the German Film Award and Grand Prize at the Film Festival of Chicago, Paris, Monte Carlo, Ohio, Munich and Prague. The films have been broadcast in over thirty countries, they have been shown in cinemas and released on Laserdisc, VHS and DVD. 2011 Schmidt- Garre staged Massenet's Manon at the Theater St. Gallen.

Schmidt- Garre is a member of the German Film Academy, and is a regular lecturer for directing and aesthetics (including at the HFF in Munich and at the Athanor Academy for Theatre, Film, TV in Burghausen). He is married to the art dealer Philomene Magers. They have two children and live in Berlin.
