Jan Suchý

January Suchy ( born October 10, 1944 in Deutschbrod, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player. For many years he was one of the best defenders in the Extraliga and also dominated in international championships.

Career as a player

January Suchy learned the game with Puck and racket on a frozen pond near his hometown. There he played alongside his friend, Holik brothers Jiří and Jaroslav. At the age of seven, she was trained by Jaroslav Holik senior at the ice rink Kotlina. From the following year the trio played for the local hockey club, Jiskra Havlíčkův Brod. Suchy went through all the youth teams and left this only when he had to do his military service in 1963. From this time he played for the army club Dukla Jihlava, with whom he won seven Czechoslovak championships and twice the most important award for players in the CSSR, the Zlata Hokejka. Overall Suchy played 16 seasons in the top division of Czechoslovakia, where he scored 162 goals, 221 goals more prepared and entered in 562 games, the ice ( at 351 penalty minutes ). He holds the scoring record for defenders of the Czechoslovak Extraliga. After the success with Dukla Jihlava you Suchy allowed to play in the Western European countries. Between 1979 and 1981 he was the WAT Stadlau in Vienna under contract, then each was followed by a season ESV Kaufbeuren (1981 /82), the EV Landsberg (1982 /83) and the UEC Mödling (1983 /84), where he began his career ended at the age of 40 years.

Very big success was with Jan Suchy, who was also known as "European Bobby Orr " in international championships. With the Czechoslovak Mr. selection, he won two medals at the Winter Olympics and six medals at World Championships. His first appointment to the national team, he received the Hockey World Cup 1965 ( winning bronze ) and took off this time every year participate in the World Cup. Three years later he was called into the squad for the Olympic Winter Games in 1968 and won the silver medal. After a mortgaged by him under the influence of alcohol car accident in 1971 Suchy was serving a sentence of 18 months in prison and was expelled from the national team, so he could not see winning the world title in 1972. In the national team, he scored 44 goals in 160 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

In 2009 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
