Jan van de Velde the Elder

Jan van de Velde (* 1568 or 1569 in Antwerp, † September 1623 ) was a Dutch painter and calligrapher.

Life

Jan van de Velde was the son of a blacksmith and nail a relative of Esaias van de Velde. He moved to Delft in 1588 and worked as a writing teacher at the local grammar school and then in Haarlem from 1592 to 1620 in Rotterdam. In addition to working in the Latin schools he trained in a private institute writer.

From 1592 closed marriage with Mayke van Bracht the son of Jan van de Velde II came out, which in turn father of an artist, Jan van de Velde III, was.

Van de Velde's major work was the Spigelian the Schrijfkonste which, engraved by Simon Frisius, 1605 came out. Copies of this book are located in a number of European and American university libraries and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art
