Jānis Endzelīns

Jānis Endzelīns (* February 22, 1873 in Homestead " Mičkēni " at Mūrmuiža, Governorate of Livonia; † July 1, 1961 in Koknese ) was a Latvian linguist.

Life

He studied philology at the University of Dorpat, where he worked as a professor. In 1907, he and Karlis Mīlenbahs published the first really scientific grammar of the Latvian language. From 1909 to 1920, he worked at the University of Kharkov, and then to 1961 at the University of Riga. As the leading Latvian philologist of his time, he was instrumental in the development of the Latvian language in the 20th century. Also the current Latvian alphabet goes back to him.

  • The primary school in Kauguri is named after him.
  • Since 1967 it is a Janis - Endzelīns Prize is now awarded by the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Family

Endzelīns was the father of the Latvian chess player Lūcijs Endzelīns, whose wife was the Latvian chess champion multiple Milda Lauberte.
