Janis Martin (soprano)

Janis Martin ( born August 16, 1939 in Sacramento, California) is an American opera singer.

Biography

After vocal studies in Sacramento and New York, 1960, she received a first engagement at the Opera House in San Francisco. They first sang mezzo- soprano roles such as Venus in Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at Wartburg, Marina in Boris Godunov and Mistress Quickly in Falstaff. After that won the 1962 Singing Competition at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, she was there a three-year contract. In 1965 she took, still as a mezzo- soprano, an engagement at the Opera House in Nuremberg. From 1970, she moved to the soprano part. She appeared at La Scala, at the Vienna State Opera, the Grand Opéra Paris, at the German Opera Berlin, at the Covent Garden Opera in London as well as in Monte Carlo, Amsterdam, Zurich, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne and Frankfurt aM. It was particularly appreciated as an interpreter of operatic roles such as Isolde by Richard Wagner in Tristan and Isolde, Kundry in Parsifal and Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen. Between 1968 and 1997 she was heard regularly at the Bayreuth Festival.
