JÄnis Mediņš
Jānis Medins ( born September 27, 1890 in Riga, † March 4, 1966 in Stockholm) was a Latvian composer.
Medins was 1904-1913 orchestral musicians in Riga and studied in addition to 1908 at the local music institute. Until 1920 he was a military bandmaster and conductor until 1944 at the Opera of Riga. Thereafter he lived in Stockholm.
With four operas and a ballet he founded the independent Latvian tradition in these genres. He also composed three symphonies, two orchestral suites, two symphonic poems, two cello concertos, a piano concerto, chamber music and choral cantata.
His two older brothers Jazeps Medins (1877-1947) and Jēkabs Medins (1885-1971) were also well-known Latvian composers.
