Jānis Urbanovičs

Jānis Urbanovičs ( born March 23, 1959 in Rezekne ) is a Latvian politician. He is since 1994 member of the Saeima and ran in 2010 for the office of the Latvian prime minister.

Biography

After attending school in Rezekne Urbanovics completed until 1982, a degree in hydraulic engineering and engineering at the Latvian Agricultural Academy in Jelgava. From 1984 to 1991 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of the Latvian SSR. In 1993, he ran for election alliance Saskaņa Latvijai - Atdzimšana Tautsaimniecībai initially unsuccessful in the elections to the 5th Saeima, but could move up in 1994 for Ernst Jurkāns to parliament. In 1994 he joined the new party Tautas Saskaņas at partija of the former Foreign Minister Jānis Jurkāns. 1995 and 1998 Urbanovics was re-elected for the Tautas Saskaņas partija ', 2002 for the Alliance Party Par Cilvēka Tiesībām Vienotā Latvijā. In 2005 he co-founded a group Saskaņas Centrs and was elected to the Saeima again on their 2006 list. 2010 joined the Tautas Saskaņas partija whose he chaired since 2005, the socialdemokratiska partija - SDP and Jaunais Centrs to a new party " socialdemokratiska partija " Saskaņa " " together. Chairman and candidate for the premiership in the 2010 elections was Urbanovics. Contrary to previous surveys Saskaņa failed, however, and remained in opposition.

Jānis Urbanovičs is President of the Foundation " Draudzība un sadarbība " and founder of " " Forum Bałtyckie ". Urbanovičs is married and has two daughters and a son.
