Janko Matúška

Janko Matuska ( born January 10, 1821 in Dolny Kubin, then Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia, † January 11, 1877 ) was a Slovak poet, writer and registrar. He is most known as the author of the Slovak anthem Nad Tatrou sa blýska ( "It flashes over the Tatra Mountains ").

Life

Matuska was born in a family of craftsmen and was schooled at deb schools of Dolny Kubin, School of Gemer before he began to study at the Lutheran Lyceum to Pressburg theology. He was also a member of the Institute of Slovak language and literature. In March he left with other students the Lyceum, as Ľudovít Stur, who until taught there at that time at the Institute, was revoked because of his pro- Slovak position. Finally, he finished his studies at the Lutheran Gymnasium in Tisovec.

1850-1870 Since 1870 he worked in various government offices, then as Clerk of the County Court of the county Arwa. He died on 11 January 1877 in Dolny Kubin, one day after his 56th birthday.

Works

Matuska is classified as a poet of the Stur - generation. He wrote mostly patriotic poems and legends, besides also prose and drama; after the revolutions of 1848/49 he stopped writing.
