János Damjanich

János Damjanich [ja ː noʃ dɒmjɒniʧ ] ( Johann Damjanics; * 1804 in Pančevo in the former military frontier district; † October 6, 1849 in Arad ) was a Hungarian general in the Revolutionary War against the Habsburgs.

He was of Serbian origin and formed only insufficient, entered a Border Regiment and was only 40 years of captain. He entered 1848 with Lajos Kossuth in contact and tried to win the border regiments organized at the outbreak of unrest in the Backa and Banat battalion mobilized National Guard, the " Rotkappler ", and distinguished himself at the head of it at the bloody battles against the Serbs which he regarded as his mortal enemies, from several times.

After the attack, the field marshal Windischgraetz he was assigned to cover the Tisza and the raid led here from Szolnok, whereupon he was promoted to General. In the decisive movements that had the withdrawal of Hungary a result, he fought under Görgei. With the advent in Komárom he broke his leg, took over after his recovery in Arad the command, but had to after the defeat of Világos give the Russians, was delivered to the Austrians, and died in Arad with twelve other Hungarian generals on the gallows.
